Let’s Be Honest for a Moment
Let's be honest for a moment and think about the culture in which we live. It is a culture that is constantly telling us to either hustle non-stop or rest endlessly without responsibility. The truth is that God calls us to neither extreme, instead He calls us to a life of fruitfulness.
We need to understand the difference between true rest and laziness disguised as rest.
If we aren't careful, we will start calling avoidance “self-care”…and delay the very things God has entrusted to us.
What Is True Rest? (Understanding the Sabbath)
From the very beginning, God established rest.
The Sabbath isn’t about laziness; it' about restoration and trust.
True rest:
reconnects you to God
restores your mind and body
prepares you for your assignment
When we rest, we are saying," God I trust you enough to pause. " We understand that the world will not fall apart when we aren't constantly moving or making money. Rest is intentional and purposeful, and temporary. Rest is not an escape from responsibility; it’s preparation for it.
When “Rest” Is Actually Avoidance
Now let’s talk about the hard truth. Sometimes what we are calling “rest” is actually procrastination, fear, overwhelm or even disobedience.
We say things like:
“I’ll start tomorrow…”
“I just need more time…”
“I’m not ready yet…”
Deep down, we know we are not resting...we're avoiding something that we really don't want to do. Procrastination isn't harmless. It can actually be disobedience. Tomorrow isn't promised to anyone, and we don’t know how much time we actually have left. So when God places something on our hearts and we keep delaying it, what we are actually doing is taking His grace for granted and withholding obedience.
The Bible gives us a beautiful example of what fruitfulness looks like.
Proverbs 31:17 says," She sets about here work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks." The Proverbs 31 woman was not lazy, she was diligent. She worked with intention and managed what was in her hands. She was consistent. This doesn’t mean she never rested, but it does mean that she didn't avoid what she was entrusted with. Her strength came from discipline, obedience, and trust in God.
The Parable of the Talents: A Warning Against Laziness
In this parable, three servants were given resources by their master. Two of them multiplied what they were given, but one servant buried his talent in the ground.
When the master returned, he said, “You wicked and lazy servant.” Not tired. Not overwhelmed. Lazy.
Why? Because he did nothing with what was entrusted to him. Think about that for a moment. God has given you:
time
gifts
ideas
opportunities
The question is, what are you doing with it?
Stewardship: Why You Can’t Keep Putting It Off
We are called to be good stewards. That doesn’t mean perfection; it means faithfulness.
Part of faithfulness is recognizing that time isn't promised. Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying, "Don't put off tomorrow what you can do today." In reality this is Biblical! Proverbs 3:27-28 says, "Do not say to your neighbor, 'Come back tomorrow and I'll give it to you'—when you have it with you."
That idea or business that God gave to you is not random, but it's an assignment. Our assignments are ultimately meant to serve others and glorify God. Delaying it doesn't protect you, it postpones your fruitfulness.
You weren't created to do things in your own strength but by the power of the Holy Spirit. The good news is that this is not about striving in your own strength, but you are empowered through the Holy Spirit.
That means:
You don’t have to force it
You don’t have to figure everything out
You don’t have to be perfect
You just have to be willing and obedient. Say: “Lord, help me show up today.” “Give me strength for what You’ve called me to do.” Because where God calls you…He equips you.
Final Reflection: Rest or Avoidance?
Here’s a simple question to ask today:
Am I truly resting… or am I avoiding?
Rest will:
restore you
prepare you
align you
But laziness will:
delay you
distract you
disconnect you from your purpose
You were not created to delay your purpose, you were created to be fruitful.
