How to Stay Consistent in a Disrupted Season

It wasn’t that I lacked discipline or even that I stopped caring. I still had dreams and goals, but life had shifted for me. Things were different. Schedules changed, unexpected responsibilities appeared, and energy moved in directions I didn’t plan for. Suddenly, the rhythm I worked so hard to build felt… off beat. I was marching to a different tune; one that I wasn't familiar with, and it was hard to find my groove.
Have you ever noticed how music feels when it loses rhythm? You can still hear the instruments and recognize the melody, but something feels unsettled.
That’s how life feels when your schedule gets disrupted.
You start to question yourself:
Why can’t I stay consistent?
Why am I falling behind?
What’s wrong with me?
Nothing is wrong with you; your rhythm just needs adjusting.
Consistency Is Not a Personality Trait
We often treat consistency like a character quality. “She’s just disciplined.” “I’m just not consistent.” “This is just how I am.” But consistency isn’t a personality trait; it’s actually structure. When your structure changes, your consistency will too. That doesn’t mean you failed, it means your system needs a recalibration.
God Created Rhythm, Not Rigidity
In the beginning, God created rhythm. Day and night. Evening and morning. Work and rest. The rhythm of creation wasn’t rushed; it was ordered. In Ecclesiastes 3, we see seasons shift.
There is a time to plant. A time to harvest. A time to build. A time to pause.
If God created rhythms and seasons, why do we expect ourselves to function like machines?
When Your Schedule Breaks, Don’t Quit — Adjust
Here’s what I’m learning in this disrupted season:
When life shifts, don’t abandon your habits; shrink them.
Instead of:
60 minute workouts → 15 intentional minutes.
Perfect meal prep → simple balanced meals.
Elaborate plans → daily priorities.
Consistency in a disrupted season isn’t about doing everything. It’s about refusing to disappear.
The Trap of “All or Nothing”
When my schedule breaks, I’m tempted to do one of two things:
Overcompensate and try to control everything.
Give up and tell myself I’ll “start fresh Monday.”
But what if consistency is simply returning quickly? Missing a day isn’t inconsistency, staying gone is. And even then — grace exists.
Ask a Better Question
Instead of asking: “Why can’t I stay consistent?” Ask: "What would faithfulness look like in this season?” What if faithfulness looks smaller. and slower? Different does not mean deficient.
Rhythm Can Be Rebuilt
Music can change tempo and still be beautiful. Life can shift and still be fruitful. If your schedule has been disrupted, don’t panic. Pause. Pray. Assess. Adjust. Rebuild a rhythm that fits the season you are actually in, not the one you wish you were in. Again, consistency isn’t about perfection, it’s about alignment. Be honest with yourself, ask God for direction and He will lead you perfectly in the season you are currently in.
