You're asking, but are you Prepared to receive?

We pray for abundance, overflow, opportunities and growth. We shout when the pastor tells us to ask for increase, favor, and open doors. But here’s an honest question: Are we prepared to receive what we’re asking for? Because sometimes the delay isn’t denial, it's preparation.
Years ago, the prayer of Jabez became very popular. Suddenly we were all asking the Lord to enlarge our territory and for Him to bless us indeed. When we start a business, we ask the Lord to send more customers or increase our finances. But abundance without preparation can quickly become overwhelm. More clients without systems becomes stress. More money without stewardship becomes loss. More responsibility without wisdom becomes burnout.
God is not just concerned with giving; He is concerned with sustaining.
God values preparation before possession. Scripture makes priorities clear:
“Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.” — Proverbs 24:27
This verse teaches order. Preparation comes before comfort. Structure comes before expansion. Responsibility comes before enjoyment.
In modern terms:
Build the systems before the success.
Develop discipline before increase.
Strengthen character before visibility.
Too often we want the house before preparing the field.
Preparation matters spiritually. God rarely pours abundance into unprepared containers.
Jesus illustrated this principle in Luke 16:10 - “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”
Faithfulness is preparation. How we manage today determines what we can handle tomorrow.
Ask yourself:
Am I managing what I already have well?
Am I stewarding my time?
Am I organized enough for growth?
Do my habits support the blessing I’m praying for?
Sometimes we are praying for multiplication while neglecting maintenance.
I believe it better to pray for wisdom, in addition to asking for blessings.
King Solomon understood something powerful. When given the opportunity to ask God for anything, he didn’t ask for wealth or power. He asked for wisdom.
“Give your servant therefore an understanding mind…” — 1 Kings 3:9
Since Solomon asked for wisdom, God trusted him with abundance.
Wisdom teaches us how to receive, manage and maintain what God provides.
Preparation is an act of faith. Noah built an ark before rain ever fell. Hebrews 11:7 reminds us that Noah prepared in reverence before evidence appeared.
Faith coupled with preparation looks like this:
“I believe it’s coming, so I’m getting ready now.”
Faith isn't just asking; faith prepares space.
Clearing debt before increase
Creating consistency before opportunity
Learning skills before promotion
Building capacity before expansion
Below are some practical ways to prepare for what you're praying for.
1. Prepare Your Mind
Renew your thinking because growth requires new habits and perspectives.(Romans 12:2)
2. Prepare Your Systems
If blessings doubled tomorrow, could you manage them?
3. Prepare Your Character
Success reveals what discipline builds.
4. Prepare Your Environment
Make room physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
5. Pray for Wisdom Daily Not just provision, but stewardship
James 1:5:“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…”
Sometimes we’re asking God for abundance while living unprepared for responsibility. I'm so grateful that God, in His mercy, prepares us before promotion. He won't give us more than we can bear, and that includes giving us things we aren't ready for. He loves us too much for that. The true blessing isn’t receiving more; it's having the capacity and wisdom to keep it.
Here's a reflection question. Instead of asking: “God, why hasn’t it happened yet?”
Try asking: “Lord, what do I need to prepare?”
Abundance flows best into prepared hands.
